It’s beyond my control… I can only live the life that fate has dealt
me…
- John A. MacEwan
I am John Alexander MacEwan and this is my story…
My family has a long history of serving the Scottish Crown from my
great-great-great-great-great grandfather who served James V and
Mary of Lorraine in the HRM’s Royal Guards to father who served in
HRM’s Royal Guard Charles II in England. My great-great-great-great
grandfather, Sir Alexander Ian MacEwan was the Captain of HRM’s Mary
Queen of Scots and James VI. My great-great-great grandmother, Megan
McKenzie MacEwan was the head of HRM’s James VI royal household. My
great-great grandfather Shamus MacEwan was battalion commander for
James VI. My great grandfather Connor MacEwan was a sergeant-at-arms
for HRM’s Charles I royal guard. My grandfather, Dugal MacEwan was a
platoon sergeant for HRM’s Charles I and Charles II. My father Ian
MacEwan was the Lt of HRM’s Charles II royal guard.
Here I brake the chain…
Never loving the military life, I took up an apprenticeship with
Robert and James Gordon the cartographers back in Scotland.
It was during my later teen years that I took to this. I learned
well about the political intrigues from Robert Gordon and continued
to assist James after his father’s death in 1661.
I found my self well trained and accepting a commission from Captain
McCleary of Neptune’s Fury. He tasked me with mapping the coast
line, several small islands, and a few of the other coast lines of
surrounding countries during our travels. The pay was good and the
danger was limited.
Many months
later....
Our new Captain,
Captain Riggs, has supposedly secured a letter of marque from HRM Charles II so I
find myself working for the crown, if indirectly, much as my
father before me. Since the gunners mate has
passed on I have acquired his duties and fulfill them well. So much
for avoiding the stench of war…
I have now been on board for several months with Captain Riggs and
have fought in more battles than I care to remember… I look forward
to once
again running on the shores of Scotland.
Long John MacEwan
